An Interview with the German Death Metal band AWAS

Dan: What is your name and what role you play in AWAS?
Martin: I'm Martin the drummer behind A.W.A.S. Also spend a lot of time on songwriting, lyrics, or doing any graphics/design things.

Dan: Can you give us a little background about the band?
Martin: A.W.A.S. depends of four members; Konni (my brother) on guitar; Viktor with growls; Eddy on bass; and me on drums. The Band was founded as “Torment” in 1999 with the aim to play death- and thrashmetal like Mortification, Vengeance Rising, Sacrament or Deliverance. We went through a few line-up changes and breaks but finally released the first official demo CD “time to choose” in January 2003. Since then we did a couple of live shows, wrote new songs and found our own style of deathmetal, so we could release our first full length album ”hope” in July 2006 on our own. Short after that we signed to Open Grave Records that put out a worldwide re-release of “hope” in April 2007.

Dan: In your words how would you describe AWAS's music?
Martin: We play straight-forward-deathmetal. Straight forward lyrics as well, as straight forward marching death metal. Mid to up-tempo speed and more focused on groove as on blast-beats. Some guys call it more old-school, but I don’t know.

Dan: What does the name AWAS mean?
Martin: A.W.A.S. are the initials of “Ardent War Against Satan”. That means we are not afraid to show that we are against the evil one. We believe in Jesus Christ and his word the bible and so also believe that satan is the birth of all evil. Ephesians 6,12 is the short and powerful definition of A.W.A.S.

Dan: Tell us about your debut album Hope, what songs you liked best and why.
Martin: Well, that’s a good question. Have listened to all these songs quiet too much at rehearsing or playing them live… ha ha ha. But I think “damned to death” is still my favourite. It deals with the good and the bad inside of ourselves. But as Christians we know that the evil flesh is “damned to death” and will die on the final day.

Dan: If you could sum up AWAS's message, what would it be?
Martin: “…there is still hope for you.”

Dan: How has the response to Hope been?
Martin: It was a quiet mixed response. Got some awesome reviews and also some crushing *lol* But in general I’m satisfied with the feedback.

Dan: What bands or albums have you been listening to lately?
Martin: Well, I listen to a lot of different stuff. The last time there was a lot of bands like nile, Lengsel, Thyrfing, Bolt thrower, Dew-Scented, Eluveitie, Meshuggah, Katatonia...

Knapp drei Jahre nach ihrer Demo-CD "Time To Choose" bescheren uns die Bonner Deathmetaller A.W.A.S. nun ihr erstes Full-length-Album "Hope". Zwischen Bremsen-Attacken und Nachwuchszugang innerhalb der Band beantwortete mir Drummer Martin Epp auch noch einige Fragen:

1. Erstmal Gratulation zu eurer neuen CD. Mit dem Ergebnis könnt ihr wohl recht zufrieden sein, nehme ich an.
Besten Dank! Ja, wir sind schon zufrieden und froh, es endlich mal geschafft zu haben; hat ja auch lange genug gedauert. Im nachhinein gibt es aber wohl immer die eine oder andere Kleinigkeit, die man hätte besser machen können ;) Man lernt eben nie aus ...

2. Überzeugen tut auch der Sound. In welchem Studio habt ihr die CD aufgenommen und wie liefen die Studioarbeiten?
He He ... Aufgenommen im a.w.a.s. Homestudio; in unserem alten Proberaum mit einfachsten Mitteln. Nur den Mix und das Mastering haben wir dann vom Baltic Sound Studio machen lassen. Übrigens ein echt feines Teil zu guten Preisen, mit Erfahrung nicht nur im Metal-Bereich (besten Dank und Grüße an Stefan noch mal an dieser Stelle). Dadurch, dass wir in unseren eigenen 4 Wänden aufgenommen haben, hatten wir natürlich den Vorteil, keinen Zeitdruck zu haben. Denke, das war für den Aufnahmeprozess 'ne gute Sache, weil wir selbst bei den Aufnahmen noch die eine oder andere Kleinigkeit am Songwriting ändern und ausprobieren konnten, was im Studio mangels Zeit meist nicht geht.

3. Zwischen eurer Demo-CD "Time To Choose" und "Hope" liegen mittlerweile gut drei Jahre. Wo liegen eurer Meinung nach die größten Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Platten?
Hm ... Wir sind älter geworden :) Denke mal, alleine am Songwriting hat sich einiges entwickelt. Die Lieder sind abwechslungsreicher und vielseitiger geworden. Auf "Hope" sind die Songstrukturen einfach mehr durchdacht und passen besser zusammen als auf dem alten Demo. Mehr Melodie und Vielseitigkeit haben wir wohl auch durch das Aufnehmen einer zusätzlichen Gitarrenspur erreicht. Teilweise ist das Album auch 'ne Ecke härter als "Time To Choose". Und die CD an sich sieht vom Design her schon etwas schicker aus ;-)

4. Mir gefallen vor allem der Gitarrensound und die vielen einprägsamen Riffs wie z.B. bei "Damned To Death", einige Trashmetaleinflüsse haben sich hier auch eingeschlichen, oder?
Na, Trash (Müll) hoffentlich nicht, aber Thrash, Japp ... definitiv. ;-) Das ist gerade bei "Damned To Death" auch ganz bewusst so entstanden. Aber unsere alten Thrashmetalwurzeln haben wir auch nie verleugnet ... ach ja, die guten alten Vengeance Rising, Deliverance, Believer und Seventh Angel z.B. Liegt aber wohl auch daran, dass ich zu der Zeit gerade wieder mal seit langem viel Thrashmetal a la Dew-Scented, Sepultura oder auch Pantera usw. konsumiert habe.

5. Gab es einen besonderen Grund, dass zwei eurer Lieder in Deutsch eingesungen bzw. eingegrunzt wurden? Bei Sacrificium gab es auf deren erster CD ja ebenfalls einen deutschen Text.
Nee, es gab eher keinen besonderen Grund, warum wir nicht mal ein paar deutsche Lieder machen sollten. Manche Aussagen können wir eben in der Muttersprache doch treffender beschreiben als im Englischen. Und 'ne Menge Leute verstehen das Englisch auch gar nicht so gut. Dann können sie wenigstens mit ein paar Texten was anfangen. Der Sacrificium-Einfluss war eher musikalischer Natur.

6. Bezüglich eurer zwei deutschen Texte: Ich finde den Inhalt von "Sünderwahn" recht interessant. Könntet ihr ein wenig mehr darüber berichten?
Die Idee zu diesem Text hatte ich, während ich in der Bibel das Buch Judas (Verse 5-11) las. Besonders Vers 9. Hier werden verschiedene Wesen genannt und klargestellt, welche Machtpositionen sie gegeneinander haben: Gott, Satan, Erzengel Michael und Mensch ... Oder der "Erste", "Zweite", "Dritte", "Vierte". Tja ... und der Kleinste ist immer der mit der größten Klappe. Er hält sich für den Größten. Doch man sollte aufpassen, welche Gegner man sich aussucht, denn sonst wird es eines Tages ein böses Erwachen geben. Wer mehr dazu wissen will, sollte selber das Buch Judas lesen und dann den Text.

7. Gab es eigentlich einen Grund, warum nicht alle eure Texte im Booklet abgedruckt sind?
Japp! War kein Platz mehr ... ha ha ha. Aber die stehen auch alle auf unser Website.

8. Einen Besetzungswechsel hat es, soviel ich weiß, auch gegeben, richtig?
Seit dem Demo eigentlich zwei. Martin Kuhn (der damals Bass spielte) hat die Band im Dezember 2004 verlassen. Zeitgleich ist auch unser kurzzeitierg zweiter Gitarrist Stefan Dyck bei uns ausgestiegen. Kurz darauf kam dann mit Eddy mehr als ebenbürtiger Ersatz, der auch neue Motivation in die Band brachte.

9. Wie wird "Hope" vertrieben? Ein Label habt ihr ja leider noch nicht, oder steht diesbezüglich schon etwas an?
Momentan wird es nur von uns selber vertrieben (bzw. auch bei Whirlwind Music und bald bei Soundmass.com verkauft). Evtl. wird sich da aber schon bald was dran ändern. Viel mehr möchte ich dazu noch nicht verraten ;-)

10. Zu guter Letzt: Irgendwelche lustige Storys bei Konzerten etc. auf Lager?
Hm ... Lustiges fällt mir grade nix ein *g. Höchstens die etwas seltsame Bühnenschau unserer Saitenabteilung bei den verzweifelten Versuchen, die Songs anständig zu spielen und gleichzeitig gegen einen Haufen ausgehungerter angriffslustiger Bremsen zu kämpfen, die uns auf dem Saxstock-Festival willkommen hießen ...
Aber was erfreuliches: Viktor ist frischgebackener Papa! Gratulation noch mal an dieser Stelle an die ganze Familie! Konzertanfragen sind übrigens immer herzlichst willkommen ;-) (am besten ohne Bremsen).

Give us some background about AWAS
We started the band in 1999 as “Torment”. But after some time we changed our name to a.w.a.s. Through the time we had some lineup changes but all, except Eddy, were band members since the beginning, although I did vocals before he I have started drumming. In December 2002 we released our first demo, which included 4 songs. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best soundquality. But things will change with our next release, our debut Album!

What did you look for when finding new band members in the past?
He or she should really like death metal and be motivated to push the band. The most important thing was that he should believe in Jesus Christ, because most of our lyrics deal with this theme.

Why the strong attitude against "satan" or "evil", would this put a lot of secular listeners off or are you serious about what you believe in?
No, I don’t think that our name drives away many secular metal heads. Sure, it shows our religious attitude very clearly, and that leads to many questions and so to good conversations with fans on our shows. Our aim is to make people reflect and search for the truth.

What was the story behind the song "Finish Him" and how was it destroyed?
Do you mean the Deathophobia 8 sampler? Well, we gave our normal sounding clip to the producer. Then as we received our CDs and listened to it, we realized the very very bad quality of our song on this release. So we complained to the producer. He told us that he wasn’t responsible for the mistake, but finally we received back our money and got a special deal for the next sampler.

What is it like to be a Christian death band in Germany and what reception/invites do you get outside of Germany?
Well, we didn’t have many invites outside of Germany. We only did two shows in Switzerland, for example our last one at “a black Christmas”. Here in Germany there aren’t many deathmetal bands who call themselves Christians. So you are some kind of exotic. But it’s great and most of the secular bands accept what we are doing.

You have your song Sünderwahn on the Twin Release of Deathophobia Sampler 11, is this mixture of secular and Christian bands or mainly German based bands?
No, Deathophobia is a famous German secular underground sampler, which includes German bands which are not very famous. But I think there is also an issue for European bands, I don´t know. But the last Issue was number 9 ;-), which included our song “Sünderwahn”, yes.

Where have you played lately and how have these concerts gone?
As mentioned we did our last gig at “a black Christmas” in Switzerland. It was great to see that the people really liked our show and got crazy. Switzerland rocks! It was the first show together with Eddy our Bass player.

What makes a good live show? Do you see yourself as more of an underground band or something else?
First you have to play your songs quiet tight and intense. Then you need a clear powerful sound. And a crowd of crazy long haired fans, who bawl all of your songs! Then it could become a good show. ;-) Yes, I think you could call us a underground band, if that means to be not very famous and commercial.

What part of the bible have you read recently and its impact on you?
I have just read Mathews chapter 9, were Jesus heals some really ill people. Then there are the Pharisees, that blame Jesus to be a tool of Satan. They don’t believe him and don’t want the others to do that. But they do. So, it does not really matter what other people, even if they are pastors or the pope, might think of you. It might be totally wrong. As long as you believe in Christ and life with him, he will take care of you.

How have you found promoting your bands material outside of Germany? How easy has it been to promote yourself say in the USA?
We are not promoted outside of Germany very well. We just have got some links on Webzines and so on.

What are the day time jobs of the band members?
I’m going to a school for training media design. Konni studies and works as an information scientist. Eddy also works as a computers scientist and our singer Viktor works as a tax consultant.

What do you think is affecting the most in the music scene right now?
I think the worst affect to the music scene is money. The art of making music has mainly become a commercial greedy and stupid business; even in Metal.

What do you think makes a song strong and worthy to say it is a classic?
Hm… it must be simple, but not boring. It has to be interesting even after hearing it 1000 times. And perhaps all bandmembers have to be dead already *lol or the band has to be split up, I don’t know.

What have you been doing lately that has helped a fan in some way?
I set up a drum-set for him. And we gave our raw recordings to a friend so he could practice to mix and master.

Which bands would you like to share the stage with and why?
Perhaps Crimson Thorn or Mortification, because the are to blame for my love to deathmetal. ;-) Deliverance or Vengeance Rising, also would be great. And of course it’s always great to share the stage with Sacrificium. It’s always fun and they totally rock!
Any new news that you can share with us?
Finally after 2month we found a new room to rehearse, so we hope to be able to do many shows to promote our album. The CD will be released very soon and it will be… quiet intense.

Die Bonner Deathmetalband Awas hat endlich ihre erste Demo-CD herausgebracht, Drummer Martin Epp stand fürs CrossOver Rede und Antwort.

1. Da viele euch noch nicht kennen stellt euch doch erst einmal vor.
Also: Awas aus Bonn wurde ca. 1999 gegründet. Nach einigen Schwierigkeiten, Namensänderungen und einer längeren Pause spielen wir nun wieder seit ca. 2 Jahren zusammen. Im Januar 2003 nahmen wir dann endlich selbst das erste offizielle Demo "Time To Choose" auf. Awas besteht aus Viktor Kröker - Vocals, Konni Epp - Guitar, Martin Epp - Drums, Martin Kuhn - Bass. Falls ihr noch spezielle Fragen habt, schaut einfach auf unsere Hp oder schreibt uns ne Mail.

2. Für was steht der Name A.W.A.S?
Awas sind die Anfangsbuchstaben von "Acoustic War Against Satan" - Der Name zeigt ganz klar unsere Einstellung zum Bösen = Satan. Soll aber nicht als Kanpfansage an den Rest der Metalszene gelten, wo es ja oft eher pro Satan oder antichristlich zugeht. Es ist nicht gegen Menschen gemeint, sondern gegen das Böse an sich.
Außerdem ist der Name ein gewisser Insider, was ich aber besser gar nicht erst versuche zu erklären ...

3. Wie würdet ihr euch stilistisch einordnen, ich höre in euren Songs einige Einflüsse von Doom, Death, Blackmetal heraus?
Gute Frage ... würde einfach sagen wir spielen Deathmetal mit einigen Thrash- und Blackmetaleinflüssen. Wir haben uns nicht auf eine Schublade festgelegt, sondern schreiben die Musik einfach so wie es uns gefällt; wie die Leute es dann nennen wollen ist deren Sache :-)

4. Erzählt ein bisschen etwas über eure Lyrics, eure Demo CD heißt "Time To Choose", für was ist es Zeit sich zu entscheiden?
Der Song "Time To Choose" handelt davon, dass jeder Mensch sich einmal für oder gegen Gott entscheidet. Der Text soll dazu anregen über das eigene Gottesbild mit all seinen Konsequenzen und entsprechenden Entscheidungen nachzudenken und ggf. umzudenken, unabhängig von jeder kirchlichen oder menschlichen Tradition.
Allgemein fließen aber auch persönliche Situationen oder Erlebnisse mit in die Texte ein. "Darkness" z.B. handelt von einer Person die ohne Gott in der "Dunkelheit" lebt, obwohl sie Gott schon kennt, und dann doch zu Gott umkehrt und Befreiung erlebt. "Erfolg?", unser neustes Stück, ist wiederum etwas gesellschaftskritisch und hinterfragt den Sinn des Lebens.
Die Texte sind also nicht auf ein bestimmtes Thema beschränkt o.ä., sie entstehen eher aus dem heraus was den Schreiber von uns gerade beschäftigt. Im allgemeinen sind uns die Texte sehr wichtig; mindestens genauso wichtig wie die Musik selbst.

5. Was für musikalische Einflüsse habt ihr, welche Stilrichtungen, Bands mögt ihr?
Hm ... das ist bei uns ziemlich unterschiedlich. Unser gemeinsamer Nenner ist Death- und Blackmetal a la Crimson Thorn, Horde, alte Mortification, Paramaecium ... usw. Im einzelnen sieht es so aus:
Konni hört alles mögliche von altem Thrashmetal a la Vengeance Rising bis zu ausgefallenem Blackmetal wie Extol. Morphia, Mortification und Lament sind so ein paar typische Bands, die Viktor gern hört, obwohl er manchmal auch ganz gerne Klassik oder andere ruhigere Sachen hört. Martin Kuhn hört wohl die modernste Musik von uns allen z.B. Linkin Park und Beastie Boys usw., aber auch härtere Sachen wie z.B. Metanoia und Living Sacrifice. Ich (Martin Epp) höre eigentlich alles mögliche von Gothic (Saviour Machine, Virgin Black) bis Death/Blackmetal wie Crimson Moonlight, Extol usw. ... aber auch so Klamotten wie Tool, System Of A Down, alte Deliverance, Dew-Scented usw.

6. Wie sieht es mit Livegigs aus, ist in naher Zukunft diesbezüglich etwas geplant, mit welchen Bands würdet ihr gerne mal spielen?
Jepp, wahrscheinlich 14. November in Troisdorf bei Bonn im "Kult" mit Sacrificium zusammen. Sonst steht bis jetzt nichts an. Aber wir für Einladungen und Anfragen natürlich immer zu haben.
Ein Traum wäre es mal mit Horde als Band zu spielen, was wohl auch immer nur ein Traum bleiben wird, da es ja keine Band in diesem Sinne ist und auch nie live gespielt wurde. Ansonsten wäre es cool mal mit Crimson Thorn, Metanoia oder mit Mortification (in "Scrolls"-Besetzung) zu spielen. ... *träum ... *träum

7. Seid ihr insgesamt zufrieden mit "Time To Choose" oder gibt es Dinge, die ihr im nachhinein gerne verbessert hättet?
Im nachhinein würden wir immer etwas anders oder besser machen wollen, das sieht man schon daran wie oft wir Songs umschreiben bis sie endgültig fertig sind :-) aber im groben und ganzen ist es schon ok.
Wobei man sagen muss, dass wir "Time To Choose" selbst in unserem Proberaum aufgenommen und gemixt haben, obwohl wir da noch nicht so die Erfahrung haben. Daher wären nächstes Mal evtl. einige Sountkorekturen an z.B. der Gitarre oder den Drums und eine bessere Produktion ganz gut. Außerdem sind unsere neuen Stücke etwas härter und an sich abwechslungsreicher ausgefallen.

Metalfest
In anderen Ländern ziehen die größten christlichen Rock-Festivals Abertausende an Besuchern. In Deutschland wohl nicht. Denn am letzten Samstag traf sich die recht übersichtliche christliche Metalszene im Dachboden des Takko-Marktes in der „Cross Music Hall“ im hessischen Bad Hersfeld zum einzigen und ergo größten christlichen Metalfestival mit dem klischeefreien Namen Metalfest. Ich war da, alleine schon das ist ein Grund für einen kleinen Konzertbericht.

A.W.A.S.
Gleich zu Beginn gab es Krach ohne Kompromisse. „Ardent War Against Satan“ machen ganz soliden Death-Metal im Windschatten von Mortification und Sacrificium. Solide gemacht mit reichlich Geknüppel und sehr gutem Growling, dazu eine recht authentische Performance. Das Cover von Mortifications „Scrolls Of The Meggiloth“ war ein stilvoller und äußerst klassischer Einstieg ins Metalfest. Wenngleich man leider sicher sein muss, dass A.W.A.S. besser gesungen hat als es Rowes Gesundheit derzeit zuließe. Alles in Allem wird A.W.A.S. sicher noch von sich hören lassen. Das deutsche Todesmetall ist in der Szene derzeit recht rar, da muss man einfach Erfolg haben. Wenn es dann mal soweit ist, muss die Band vielleicht auch nicht mehr neben mir in einer Turnhalle übernachten, sondern bekommt ein Hotel spendiert. Bis dahin können sie sich schon mal Luftmatratzen kaufen, die nicht platzen. (Mann oh Mann, ich hatte mich noch nie so erschrocken.)

A.W.A.S. which stands for Ardent War Against Satan is a death metal band based out of Bonn, Germany. They have actually been together for about eight years now and have released one demo and this debut album. The album was released in 2006 independently but was then released officially by Open Grave Records in 2007.
Musically A.W.A.S. plays some pretty serious death metal with a lot of black metal influences. The band even states that they sound like some death metal got infected with some black metal. I definitely believe it. The band plays some pretty fast to mid paced death metal with lots of blasting. The drumming handled by Martin is top notch, and it would have to be to keep up. This is a band that likes to be pumping on all cylinders, whether they are blasting a hundred miles per hour or simply slamming walls of heaviness on your face. The guitar playing is solid, but I am saddened because there are no solos to speak of. I think some well placed guitar solos would boost the band even further towards greatness. The vocals are quite enjoyable as a toss up of deep gutteral death metal vocals and some higher pitched black metal shrieks. My only real complaint is that the kick drum could have been made louder in the final mix, as I think the level of brutality would have increased.
The Lyrics are half in German half in English, you can read all of them on the band's website. The common theme is salvation through Jesus Christ and the destruction of Satan and his ways. They are very clear and upfront about their beliefs, which is quite respectable these days.
Overall this CD is a good experience for those who like their death metal brutal and unrelenting. Fans of underground death metal should eat this up, although the nature of the music can be a bit repetitive, we hope to hear more from AWAS in the future.

A.W.A.S. hails from Germany & spew forth some very tight & catchy Death Metal music. They have some really strong song structures with speed enduce riffs, heavy drums beats & some crushing vocals. The music has some flavoring of old school influenced Death Metal mixed with some touches of new school Death bands. They have a creepy almost errie sound to their music too. It's a little haunting, but not in a Black Metal way. The vocals are done in a mid rangedDeath growl style. They remind me a lot of old DEATH & DISINCARNATE a bit!
Well worth checking out, because you will play this one over & over again!!!

Machen wir einen kleinen Ausflug immer am Rhein entlang nach Bonn. Dort erwartet uns die Deathmetalband A.W.A.S. mit ihrem Debütalbum "Hope". Leider kam ich bisher nie in den Genuß einer Liveshow, aber ihre Demo-CD "Time To Choose" aus dem Jahr 2003 ist mir noch in Erinnerung. Mit ihrer Debütscheibe "Hope" (wenn auch nur als CDR, dafür in einem schicken Schwarz-Outfit) konnte sich die Band recht ordentlich steigern und auch das Baltic Sound Studio zimmerte ihnen einen amtlichen Sound. Geboten wird Straight forward-Deathmetal mit einigen Thrash- und Black-Einflüssen (letztgenannte in Form von einzeln eingestreuten Screams). Gut gefallen mir z.B. die Gitarrenparts bei "Damned To Death" (bohrt sich schön in den Gehörgängen fest und man kann dabei gut Headbangen) oder der Riffaufbau bei "A.W.A.S.", das man schon vom Demo her kannte. Eventuell würde an manchen Stellen eine zweite Gitarre nichts schaden, von der Melodieführung her, aber für eine Debütscheibe einer noch jungen Band haben A.W.A.S. eine sehr ordentliche Arbeit gemacht. Definitiv eine Band mit viel Potenzial, von der wir hoffentlich noch viel hören werden. Mist, daß das Metalfest im Oktober 2006 aussetzen muß, denn A.W.A.S. standen nämlich auf dem Programm, so hätte ich sie endlich mal live erleben können. Na gut, dann hoffentlich nächstes Jahr.
